2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Questions for the Week:

FIRST READING: ISAIAH 62:1-5

Isaiah spoke of God’s delight in Jerusalem and desire to see Israel as His spouse. What married couples do you know who genuinely take delight in each other?

SECOND READING: 1 CORINTHIANS 12:4-11

Paul taught the Corinthians that the gifts of the Holy Spirit to individuals are meant to benefit and unify the community. What gifts do you have that you think benefit others?

GOSPEL: JOHN 2:1-11

After all the wine was consumed, Jesus turned water into wine for the bride and groom at the wedding. When have you received an unexpected gift from someone?

A Word from Fr Danny:

At Christmas, it was the lowly shepherds who were privileged to witness the glory of God. Similarly, at the wedding feast of Cana, it was the servants who first realized that a miracle had taken place. One might suspect that this reveals something about the heart of Christ: those who have the least from the world’s perspective often hold a privileged place in the heart of God.

The question arises: can we do anything to attract that same privileged gaze of Christ? And what hope must this have given? Can we become like the shepherds or the servants? What do they have in common? Yes, they are poor and lowly, but they are also attentive to the needs of others. Both are working while others are either asleep or enjoying themselves.

Does not this sound very much like parenthood? It should come as no surprise that family and parenthood are a focus of Pope Francis and the Jubilee Year “Pilgrims of Hope,” which the Church has begun. Pope Francis has said: “For the desire of young people to give birth to new sons and daughters as a sign of the fruitfulness of their love ensures a future for every society. This is a matter of hope: it is born of hope and generates hope.”

- Fr Danny

We have so many wonderful young people who contribute in so many ways to our vibrant parish life.  As well as our mighty team of altar servers, our children serve on our greeting team, operate the projector and livestream and sing in our choirs.

We would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the way they bring the love of God to life in our parish by sharing their gifts.

Where:  Playground on Jarden Mile

When: Sunday 9 February at 11.30am.

Since it’s humble beginnings in 2018, our Community Lunch has grown into a valued weekly event, serving around 30 people every Tuesday. It’s a wonderful opportunity for our parish and the wider Taupō community to connect over delicious food in a welcoming and friendly environment - truly bringing the love of Christ to others.

This success is thanks to Msgr Trevor’s vision and hospitality, Margaret Beck’s organisation, and the dedication of our incredible team of volunteers who set up, cook, bake, serve, and clean up each week. A huge thank-you to everyone involved!

After years of leadership, Margaret is ready to hand over the reins. Do you have a gift for organisation and a passion for community? If so, please contact Margaret Beck to continue this wonderful initiative that nourishes both body and spirit.

I love watching the people enjoying coming together as they make new friends. It is a privilege to be able to serve everyone. I also loved Msgr Trevor’s enthusiasm and the joy we all feel as we servers come together for coffee and sharing afterwards. We get as much as we give! … Leslie
