4th Sunday of Lent
Questions for the Week:
FIRST READING: 1 Samuel 16:1,6-7,10-13
Much to Samuel’s surprise, the Lord instructed him to anoint the youngest of Jesse’s sons, David, to be the next king of Israel. When have you been surprised by God?
SECOND READING: EPHESIANS 5:8-14
Paul urges the Ephesians: “Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.” What do you think pleases the Lord?
GOSPEL: JOHN 9:1-41
Jesus’ healing of the blind man created confusion, anger, and fear among some of the people witnessing this event. In a real sense, Jesus’ healing exposed the blindness of others. How do we prevent ourselves from being blind to God’s presence in this season of Lent?

A Word from Fr Danny:
Why do bad things happen to good people? Or, why does God allow suffering and evil in the world? Christ offers an answer in his response to the question of whether the man born blind suffered because of his or his parents' sin. Christ answers, 'He was born blind so that the works of God might be displayed in him.' While this may not fully satisfy, it is the answer straight from the mouth of Christ.
And what are the works of God? We know that the ultimate work of God is the cross and the redemption that flows from it. At the Easter Vigil, during the Exultet, we hear the words: 'O happy fault, O necessary sin of Adam, which gained for us so great a Redeemer!' The paradox of the Christian life is that, even in the midst of a fallen world, we are in a better position than Adam and Eve were in the garden. Why? Simply because we have Christ.
