3rd Sunday of Lent

Questions for the Week:

FIRST READING: EXODUS 17:3-7

The Lord responded to the prayer of Moses with the miracle of water from the rock for the Israelites to drink. What might you ask from the Lord this week?

SECOND READING: ROMANS 5:1-2,5-8

Paul speaks of having “hope” because “the love of God has been poured into our hearts though the Holy Spirit.” How does your faith in Jesus give you hope?

GOSPEL: JOHN 4:5-42

Through her dialogue with Jesus, the Samaritan woman comes to the realization that Jesus is the Messiah. In her joy, she tells other Samaritans about her encounter with Jesus. How can you share your faith in Jesus with others?

A Word from Fr Danny:

Did Jesus choose to be by Himself at the well in the heat of the day specifically so that He could encounter the Samaritan woman privately? If so, is there anywhere else He does this deliberately for us?

Maybe this is a way to understand the Sacrament of Penance. In confession, Christ is waiting for us, and strangely, we quench His thirst. In confession, as on the cross, Christ is saying, 'I thirst.' I know you, and just as His thirst was quenched with vinegar on the cross, we fulfill His desire, His thirst, by offering Him the vinegar of our sins in confession.

Part of the joy in celebrating the Sacrament of Confession can be knowing that we are allowing Christ to do what He came for: to free us from our sins and reconcile us with His mystical body, the Church, so that through that body we can receive the fullness of His presence in Holy Communion.
