23rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Questions for the Week:

FIRST READING: Isaiah 35:4-7

The prophet Isaiah encouraged the Israelites to be strong in their conviction that God was coming to heal them and renew creation itself. Who could you encourage to be firm in their faith this week?

SECOND READING: James 2:1-5

James taught believers to make no distinctions between the rich and the poor in their community gatherings. How do you think showing no partiality helps a community grow in faith?

GOSPEL: Mark 7:31-37

We hear today how the people of the Decapolis were astonished at Jesus’s healing of the deaf and mute. What parts of your life need healing?

A Word from Fr Danny Fraser-Jones

In today’s gospel, we hear the word 'Ephphatha,' a retention of the original Aramaic meaning 'be opened.' One gets the sense that the command to 'be opened' was not just about the physical healing of the ears and tongue, but more profoundly, an invitation to be open to the continuing movement of the Holy Spirit. Perhaps this is why Our Lord also commanded those present to remain silent about the miracle—so that the openness He commanded would not be overshadowed by the secondary desire to make Christ known through His power. Are we more attracted by to the power of Christ, or the person of Christ?

Fr. Danny
