26th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Questions for the Week:

FIRST READING: NUMBERS 11: 25-29

Moses hoped the Spirit of the Lord would be bestowed on all the Israelites, not limited just to the seventy elders. What are you hoping for this week?

SECOND READING: JAMES 5:1-6

James holds the rich in low regard, warning them against the trappings and dangers of excessive wealth. How are you generous toward others with your resources?

GOSPEL: MARK 9:38-43,45,47-48

Jesus taught his disciples the valuable lesson: “Whoever is not against us is for us.” How do you promote unity rather than division at work or at home?

A Word from Fr Danny Fraser-Jones

Our Lord has been lovingly correcting His disciples over the past couple of weeks, and today is no different, though perhaps a little more subtle. Yes, He tells John not to stop the man from casting out demons in His name. But why? John emphasises twice that the man is 'not one of us' and that ‘they’ tried to stop him. It seems the 'us' John refers to is the disciples, but Christ corrects him with a different 'us'—'Anyone who is not against us is for us.' Is this not a significant danger for us in the Church, that the 'us' we align with might not include the 'us' of Christ?

Fr. Danny

After 6 years of being diligently and constantly on call at Waikato Hospital, Fr Danny is taking a well deserved break over October. Fr John Jolliffe sm will be joining us for the month. We pray for Fr Danny, Fr John and all the priests in our diocese.

Ministers for Sunday, 29 September
26th Sunday in Ordinary Time(B)

THIS WEEK….

This Sunday, we gather for the Bishop’s Annual Appeal 2024 with the theme “Clearly, Dearly, Nearly.” Your generosity supports Bishop Richard in his mission to spread the Good News, care for the vulnerable, and nurture our faith community. Through this Appeal, the Diocese extends the Bishop’s hands and heart, reaching out in love and service.

Brochures, Bishop Richard’s letter, and donation inserts will be available in your parish this weekend, and the online donation portal will be live at www.bishopappeal.cdh.nz

Please consider making a donation—every gift, big or small, helps continue this vital work.

On the tough urban streets of Washington, D.C., 10-year-old Thaniel Battle (Cordereau Dye) takes up with a gang who plans to rob a shop owned by Jewish immigrant Eli Zeal (Burt Reynolds). During the robbery, Eli puts up a fight -- and in the ensuing chaos, Thaniel unwittingly shoots him. Thaniel's mother, Tyree (April Grace), panics and kidnaps Eli, dragging him and Thaniel to her Louisiana hometown, where she rediscovers her Christian roots and introduces both son and hostage to the church.

COMING SOON!

Alpha isn't just a course to learn about Christiantiy.  It's an opportunity to build community and to develop or deepen our relationship with God.  Not sure about it?   Here's some feedback from our last Alpha Course in July:

"I learnt a lot about the history of the bible, I experienced a slow rebuilding of my faith/relationship with God. I called myself a Christian for the first time in 25 years, halfway through the course. I'm close to God again. Keen and excited to follow him and continue this journey. I have felt so safe, supported and welcome here. I have felt so much love and care. Thank you. "
