6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Questions for the Week:

FIRST READING: JEREMIAH 17:5-8

Jeremiah believes it is wise to trust in the Lord.  When have you had to place your trust in God?

SECOND READING: 1 CORINTHIANS 15:12,16-20

Paul challenged those in the Corinthian community who did not believe in the resurrection of the dead. How do you support family or friends who are non-believers?

GOSPEL: LUKE 6:17,20-26

We hear today how Jesus brought comfort to those struggling in life and challenged those who lived a life of ease.  Is there someone you know who could benefit from your words of comfort this week?

A Word from Fr Danny:

Today, we hear the lesser-known version of the Beatitudes from Luke, where Our Lord teaches that our future happiness, or beatitude, is linked to hunger, weeping, and being hated by others. How can this strange teaching be true? Why does Christ seem to connect our happiness to such suffering?

Is it merely so that when we experience these things, we have a mental escape, secure in the knowledge that they will pass and ultimately make us better? No—it is true, first and foremost, because Christ says it, and his words carry that power. Furthermore, he lives them, and he knows that our joy comes from living as closely as possible to him, which necessitates sharing in these experiences with him.

When was Christ poor, hungry, weeping, and hated? Seek out these moments in his life, and there you will likely find the meaning in yours.

- Fr Danny
