8th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Questions for the Week:

FIRST READING: ECCLESIASTICUS 27:5-8

Sirach teaches us to pay attention to how people speak; it reveals a lot.  How often do you find yourself weighing your words before speaking?

SECOND READING: 1 CORINTHIANS 15:54-58

Paul speaks of Jesus’s resurrection as taking away the “sting” and “victory” of death. What words of comfort do you use to those grieving over the death of a loved one?

GOSPEL: LUKE 6:39-45

Jesus encourages his followers to be humble in judgment of others and mindful in speech. Have you had good role models in your life for these virtues?

A Word from Fr Danny:

I remember hearing a talk where the speaker, expounding on today’s Gospel, asked us to imagine someone walking around with a 2-by-4 sticking out of their eye—such that every time they moved their head, they ended up clubbing the people around them. One gets the sense that God is inviting us to become surgeons, requiring us to see clearly. And what is seeing clearly if not being in the truth—seeing things as they really are?

This usually requires intellectual or spiritual surgery, and it’s no surprise that, just as one often has to fast before bodily surgery, the Church recognises the value of fasting before God performs His surgery on us. Perhaps we can think of the upcoming season of Lent as a time of surgery, during which we invite the Divine Physician to work on the delicate areas of our lives where we are holding tightly to ideas that are not fully in the truth.

- Fr Danny

This Lent, embark on a journey of Metanoia—a transformative change of heart inspired by the Gospels. We will gather on Fridays at 7.30pm in lent to support our daily reflections with group discussions.
