1st Sunday of Lent

Questions for the Week:

FIRST READING: DEUTERONOMY 26:4-10

Moses taught the Israelites the importance of remembering the story of their release from Egyptian slavery. This event defined them as a people loved by God. What is a story from your family that has helped define you?

SECOND READING: ROMANS 10:8-13

Paul encouraged the Christians in Rome to have a genuine faith in Jesus in both heart and mind. As the season of Lent begins, how might you show others the sincerity of your faith?

GOSPEL: LUKE 4:1-13

We hear how Jesus was tempted by the devil as he was preparing to begin his public ministry. What temptation can you confront this Lent?

A Word from Fr Danny:

I have always imagined Jesus spending His 40 days in the wilderness sitting under a tree or in a cave. However, in the Gospel, we hear that Jesus was led by the Spirit through the wilderness. This implies a progression—moving across the wilds of temptation and difficulty and emerging on the other side—all the while being guided by the Spirit.

In addition to the Spirit’s leading, we also hear that the devil leads Christ twice in the second and third temptations. Perhaps our Lenten observances—prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—help us discern by whom we are being led. Nevertheless, we get the sense that the Holy Spirit is ultimately in charge, and it is no coincidence that the final destination of these leadings and temptations is the Temple—the place of worship and contemplation.

- Fr Danny

This Lent, embark on a journey of Metanoia—a transformative change of heart inspired by the Gospels. We will gather on Fridays at 7.30pm in lent to support our daily reflections with group discussions.
